According to the Higher Education Act of the State of Schleswig-Holstein (Gesetz über die Hochschulen im Lande Schleswig-Holstein) of 28.02.2007, Flensburg University of Applied Sciences (FUAS) is legally a higher education institution (Hochschule), that may confer academic degrees. The term Fachhochschule is commonly translated as university of applied sciences (UAS).
As a UAS the Flensburg University of Applied Sciences is a member of the German Rectors' Conference (Hochschulrektorenkonferenz (HRK)) and a member of the Schleswig-Holstein Rectors' Conference (Konferenz der Rektoren der Schleswig-Holsteinischen Hochschulen (LRK-SH)). In rota with the other UAS in the State of Schleswig-Holstein, Flensburg University of Applied Sciences assumes the curiate vote of the universities of applied sciences in the German Rectors' Conference and in the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD)).
